We are three dimensional beings……
Almost every trial starts the same way; this beautiful woman sits in my chair and begins to tell me exactly what she doesn’t like about herself. I have even had some women begin to cry. It is always ‘this line’, ‘this scar’, ‘my nose’, ‘this bump’, ‘these freckles’, I could go on and on.
The funny thing is that I usually have no idea what they are talking about and rarely do I even notice what they are pointing out. The thing all of us need to realize is that when we look in the mirror we always see what we don’t like. And if you look in the mirror 30 times a day, every single time you will zoom in on the things that bother you. That is a hell of a lot of reminders. I call this hyperfixating. And we need to stop it. Any perusing of Reddit threads about makeup and skin and you will find the exact same thing. Women and men complaining about things that are basically nonexistent. It is hard in our super filtered world, to understand that people have flaws. We all do. We all have pores and dark circles and scars and it just comes with being human. We also need to understand that people don’t look at us the same way we look at ourselves. When we look in the mirror we see a two dimensional face staring back at us, flaws and all. But what others see is a living breathing smiling moving three dimensional being whose tiny flaws are not even noticed, never mind magnified.
So the next time you look in the mirror, stand an arms length away. Smile. Then examine all the things you love about yourself and start there. Remember we all have flaws, even those that seem perfect and flawless have flaws I assure you. Embrace what makes you you, and maybe when you see me you can start by telling me all the beautiful things you love about yourself. I would love that.
